The History of Imbolc

Imbolc is the traditional end of winter and beginning of Spring as the midway point between Winter Solstice and Vernal Equinox. The word means “in the belly” and it is commonly known in other traditions as the Festival of Light, Candlemas or St. Brigid's Day but the Fae know it as Fairylight – so named for its significance in the renewal of Balefires, a potent source of glamour.

In Faerie lore, this is the time of year where the Flamebearers set out from Tír na nÓg – the Land of Youth, carrying a light from the eternal Balefire.
